The Floragard tortoise substrate is excellently suited for keeping reptiles and in particular land tortoises of all kinds in outdoor enclosures and terrariums on a natural substrate.
This special product was developed in collaboration with experienced tortoise keepers and breeders. The tortoise substrate is a 100% natural, fertiliser-free bedding that is used successfully as a ground substrate even in the professional zoo sector. Besides peat, the valuable clay mineral bentonite ensures excellent basic moisture in the substrate, while the precisely adjusted pH value is matched exactly to the needs of reptiles. The peat used does not come from intact bogs, but from areas that were already used for agriculture, such as pasture. After peat extraction, these areas are renaturalised, so that a living bog can develop again within a few years.

The great advantages of the fertiliser-free Floragard tortoise substrate lie in the odour-free absorption of urine and excrement without becoming wet or forming mould. A balanced moisture level is crucial, especially for the smooth shell development of young tortoises.
As it contains no long-fibre components, the animals, and even small hatchlings, can move around very easily and like to use the tortoise substrate for burrowing as a hiding place. Adult females also see this bedding as a suitable place to lay eggs. Should the tortoise substrate become mixed with the food, the risk of dangerous sand impaction in the intestine is minimised, unlike with spread sand. Even when dry, dust development is very low. This is a further advantage for species-appropriate keeping, particularly for tortoise species kept specifically in terrariums.
